Dibujo de Retrato – EN

The Portrait Drawing Seminar is a theoretical and practical course focused on the study of portraiture through direct observation of the model. Throughout the sessions, students will work with live models, combining theoretical explanations with practical drawing exercises.

The course approaches portraiture through the fundamentals of academic drawing: observation, proportions, the structure and construction of the head, the relationship between the different elements of the face, and the study of values and light.

Working with a live model allows students to develop the ability to analyse and translate the three-dimensional forms of the face into drawing, with particular attention to structure and the relationships between planes, proportions, and values.

The seminar is conceived as a space for study and practice for artists and students who wish to deepen their understanding of portrait drawing within a shared working environment. Its format combines guidance from the instructor with a greater degree of independence on the part of each student, encouraging consistent practice and the ability to apply the principles studied to their own artistic process.

Sessions may take place alongside students from the full-time programme, creating a shared studio environment and allowing participants to experience working from life together.

Throughout the seminar, the fundamental principles of portrait drawing will be progressively explored:

  • Observation and analysis of the model.
  • Facial proportions and relationships.
  • Construction and structure of the head.
  • Study of the main forms of the skull and face.
  • Construction of the eyes, nose, mouth, and ears.
  • Planes of the head and an understanding of volume.
  • Light, shadow, and the organisation of values.
  • Modelling form through drawing.
  • Simplification and synthesis of visual information.
  • Developing a portrait from the live model.

  • Theoretical explanations will be applied directly through exercises with the model, allowing students to put the concepts studied into practice and develop a deeper understanding of portraiture through observation.
